Intended Audience
Level 4 Medicine in Remote Areas is a 5-day course designed for people with Pre-Hospital Emergency Care qualifications and experience. The goal of MIRA is to educate and train these individuals in advanced skills and knowledge related to working in remote, austere and hostile environments.
Therefore, MIRA is ideal for both medical and security professionals who work in or want to work challenging environments in roles such as Tier 1 Medic, Close Protection, CP Team Leader, Disaster Response, Oil Rig Worker, Expedition Leaders, Frontline Journalists etc.
NB, due to the above, it is a requirement to at least one of the following qualifications:
FREC 3 or equivalent (e.g. FPOS-I)
A recognised Emergency Medical Technician such as FREUC5, L4 AAP, IHCD Ambulance Aid
Police Team Medic qualification
Combat Medical Technician (if CMT-1 or 2 then must hold current BTLS certification)
Relevant professional i.e. paramedic (nurses and doctors must provide evidence of pre-hospital emergency care qualifications and/or experience)
Overview
Over 5 days, the following skills and knowledge are covered:
Dynamic risk assessment
Appropriate use of protective equipment
Triage and scene management
Effective communication
The management of injuries from common mechanisms of injury, including moving vehicle collisions, ballistics trauma, assault, penetrating trauma and falls from height.
Basic life support and oxygen therapy
Basic and advanced management of massive external bleeding
Basic, intermediate and advanced airway management
Basic and advanced management of chest injuries
Circulatory system assessment and haemorrhage control
Shock and fluid replacement
The recognition and management of traumatic brain injuries
Management of fractures, dislocations and burns
Prevention and management of environmental illnesses
The recognition and management of medical emergencies, including special circumstances
Appropriate patient packaging and casualty handling
Remote area and prolonged patient care.
